A Sara Novakowski story by Eden Blackthorn

The Hand that Feeds You

Sara looked at the crowd of Kindred. She was appalled at their ignorance and stupidity. Marcus had obviously been setup. Someone wanted it to look like Marcus was trying to kill Bob... But, they wanted it to seem like a setup. And Martin, her sire, had been setup to make it look like he was the one who setup Marcus. Plans within plans. Didn't they realize that they were being played like puppets? Martin was too smart and devious to have left such obvious clues that Marcus was being setup to kill Bob. For Cain's sake, a -gangrel- looked at the note and figured out that the note was a setup and that it pointed to Martin.

She had been trying to argue the case with the Kindred for a while now but no one would listen. A couple of them had made up their minds and the rest had followed... like the sheep they were. "They don't deserve the Kiss!" she hissed bitterly under her breath. Sara couldn't stand it anymore. She was the only one defending Martin. They weren't going to listen to her and she wouldn't be able to argue the case rationally for much longer. She had to get away and calm down or else she was going to frenzy. Once she calmed down, she could try again. Until then, she was useless. Everyone was ignoring her now, in any case.

Sara stomped off in the darkness. At least one Kindred had taken notice of Sara's departure; Liam. He saw where she went and soon followed while the debate over Martin's unlife continued. Two other Kindred followed Liam.

Sara stood under a streetlight, near a grove of trees. She paced back and forth, muttering under her breath. "They just want Martin dead. He's one of the major influences in this area. They are tired of him and his words. I suppose because he's always showing them up." She didn't notice Liam watching her.

"Sara?" Liam said quietly.

Sara's body jerked in surprise. "I didn't hear you approach." Her body slowly relaxed from the immediate defensive stance. Liam was one of the few kindred she trusted.... As far as any kindred trusted another not of their clan. She looked like she wanted to cry. "Dammit Liam, Martin's been setup. You know it."

"Well, I seriously doubt that he is as stupid as to be so obvious, but the evidence does point to him." Liam's voice was carefully neutral. He knew that she was very frustrated. As Martin's child, she was too close to the situation and to Martin to see the whole picture.

"It's all circumstantial. And, it's a matter of interpretation. That letter could mean anything. They're just looking for someone to blame, to kill."

Liam said nothing. He knew Sara wanted to do what was right. And she was loyal to Martin. She couldn't see all of the things he did. All the manipulations. All the lies.

Sara kicked the streetlight in frustration. "They're bored. That's all it is. And some of them wouldn't mind it if Martin was put to the final death. This isn't right. This isn't justice!" She started to pace again, prowling like an angry tiger.

"I know. But it's Kindred law. It's the way it must be." Liam looked sad. `If only I didn't have to do this... But, it's for her own good. She'll be safer this way.' He turned to walk away and then stopped. "Sara?" She stopped pacing to look at him. This gave the other two kindred who had maneuvered themselves behind her the distraction they needed to attack unseen.

There was a blur of motion and Sara turned towards the movement. Too slow. She felt a touch and couldn't move. It was the paralyzing touch that only Liam could do, but Liam was in front of her. He couldn't have done it. Sara's mind spun in confusion.

`There are more like him. Who are they? What do they want?' She looked at Liam as he watched. `He looks sad.' She thought. Her eyes begged the question of "Why?" to him. Liam stayed silent. Sara's mind raced as she felt a hand close her eyes then felt a blindfold placed over them. They moved her to streetlight she had so recently kicked.

"The rope." Quinn said to Bishop. Bishop pulled some rope out of his trench coat as Quinn pulled Sara's arms above her head and held then there while Bishop tied them to the streetlight post.

Sara was terrified. There was nothing she could do. She couldn't move, fight or struggle in any way. `What are they doing to me?!' Her mind screamed frantically. She wished she could do something; frenzy, anything.

Liam sighed. 'I wish it didn't have to be this way. At least she won't be killed.' He thought as he handed Quinn a stake. Bishop looked nervous and held Sara's still form in place against the street lamp. Quinn licked his lips, place a hand on Sara's body and aimed the stake. Then he stabbed her with it all the way through heart and out her back.

Sara felt the stake drive into her. If she could have screamed, she would have, but the paralyzing touch held her silent. Then blackness. Her body slumped against the streetlight.

Liam winced as Quinn staked Sara. Bishop let go of her as soon as the stake was through. He was careful not to let the blood splatter on him. "Damn." Bishop whispered.

Liam walked over to Sara and stroked her face once. "I'm sorry, Sara." he said. "But sometimes you just have to bite the hand that feeds you, if only to save them from themselves. I know you trusted me. You still can. I know you won't believe that now but, this is the best way."

Bishop untied Sara from the lamp post. Then he picked her up and took her the waiting car, putting her in the trunk of it. "Sorry luv. You'll be safe with me. I promise I won't let anyone hurt you." Bishop whispered as he settled her into the truck. He glanced at Quinn and Liam waiting to the side. "Somehow, we'll prove to you what Martin really is." He slammed the trunk shut and returned to Quinn and Liam.

"I'll never know how Martin ended up with a child like her." Quinn muttered. "She's not like him." Liam and Bishop nodded.

Liam looked at his watch. "It's almost time. Let's go." The three Kindred split up and returned to the still raging debate over the fate of Martin's existence.

No one had noticed their departure or return.

(Note: This story is only based on a dream I had involving my live action character and other characters in the Live Action game. Fortunately, this never actually happened to my character.)
