There are days where my characters seem far more intelligent and wise than I ever could be. One the Gaming Philosophy listserve, the topic was thrown out by Rich - what pearls of wisdom have your alter egos come up with? The answers are insightful, cynical, enlightening and amusing.

Rich, Greg, Jennifer, Matt, Ben, Johanna

Rich

"Never do with magic what you can do with your own two hands." - Briony again, who to date has suffered the least for her craft compared to many other magic using types in this chronicle.

"You can clean them up, teach them which fork to use, and who to address how, but a barbarian is still just a barbarian." - Briony.

"Just because you *can* do something, doesn't mean you *should.*" (Must credit Ben with that.) - Briony Goldmane-Nomannson, witch, medium, lawyer, priestess of Lliira.

"Most people have things happen to them. I happen to those who deserve me. Which would you rather be?" - Eddie Grimm.

"A polite tongue and a show of respect goes farther with good leaders than subservience and silence goes with bad leaders. That's how you tell the difference." - Eddie Grimm.

"Grown ups don't think they have to check *under* the bed anymore." -Eddie.

"Those who believe in you - even if it's to hate you - are of more value than those who ignore or dismiss you." - Eddie.

"Never swear an oath or make a promise out of anger." - Eddie Grimm (aka Lord Moon'sTouch the Harbinger).

"To effectively interrogate someone through torture, you only need to convince them that you will do something - you don't actually have to do it. Their imagination is normally worse than reality." -Eddie Grimm (aka Lord Moon'sTouch the Harbinger).

***

"Never face your opponent at home. Everyone wants something - use that to draw them onto your battlefield." - Amira Carbury-Stafford.

"I have learned that even though you may know you are better than others, it is in your best interest to not let them know you know that." - Amira Carbury-Stafford.

"When playing by any rules, if it's not specifically stated to be illegal, it is by default legal." - Lisette Connoly/Baronness Ligeia Craidh ap Eiluned (Who also happens to be a gamer . . .).

***

"Some people are like scud missiles - point them in a direction, piss them off enough, and then hope they do the right thing while you go hide." - Jeremy Danvers (Toreador Industrial music god).

***

"The best way to rid yourself of a curious person is to point them at a secretive one." - Pyotr Silent-Thunder.

***

"Never work for free. Advertising, however, is it's own reward." - Nat Ranks (crazy Shadowrunner/Voodoun Houngan - parphrased from Death's Head comics).

***

"No nationality has a monopoly on arrogance, violence or evil. Nor does any nationality have sole property over wisdom, innocence, or peace." -Taryn "Shield-Biter" MacRiden.

***

"The only constant is that all societies fall to ruins. This is not a bad thing." -Samuel Damiano - Ishmaelite Mummy.

"When choosing between two evils, I prefer the one I know is going to win." -Samuel Damiano - Ishmaelite Mummy.

***

"There is no crime that does not have a more cruel punishment." -Prince Solomon, Brujah Elder.

"Those who think themselves wise are most often just arrogant." -Prince Solomon, Brujah Elder.

(In regards to all vampires in his city) "You are all enlightened creatures. Act like that and you will be treated like that. Act like spoiled children and expect to be treated such. Act like rabid beasts and know I will have you put down." -Prince Solomon, Brujah Elder.

***

"We are all redeemable - we are all the children of God." -Father Gabriel, Brujah Individualist/Catholic Priest.

"As vampires, we each do evil things from time to time. Only by refusing to make amends for your evil are you actually damning yourself." -Father Gabriel, Brujah Individualist/Catholic Priest.

"Jesus came with a sword - Matthew 11:34 - but he has given me a shield. And a leash. And so I will lead the misbegotten children of Caine back into the light." -Father Gabriel, Brujah Individualist/Catholic Priest.

Greg

"Subtle effects are, in the long run, often more effective than the outrageous. Use magic to nudge here and there and watch the largest effects happen that would fail or be opposed by too strong a force if done in an impatient manner." - Cho Fong Min, asian mystic.

"If you suspect an enemy approaching, lay in wait as if unaware. More often then not, the enemy will reveal himself in action rather than stay hidden by inaction. An ambush is best dealt with by being aware prior and allowing it to happen - the foe will make mistakes that you will be watching for." - Min.

"Teaching the unenlightened to defend themselves is the way to bring them closer to enlightenment. If they have to worry about attack, they have no time to think. If they need not think of defence, they will find less time to worry and more to grow. Nurture this growth." - Min.

***

"Awww, fuggit, sometimes you don't have the time to be fekkin' subtle - don't hesitate to go over the top when you damn well need to." - Jay Waters / Lord Amber the Vindictive ap Gwydion, faerie smith/sage/asshole.

***

"When one must follow a leader, one must both respect and yet be ready to depose him. If the leader turns against your needs, you should have thought of the proper responce and enact it without thought or remorse." -Kwang Po Xiang, vampire lord and snake-in-the-grass.

***

"Always leave the option of talking open. You never know when a chance to ally will present itself." - Professor Victor 'Egon' Ivanov, wierd scientist.

"Never trust only your instincts about people - ask your friends. If you can't take your friend's honest answers, either they are right, or they aren't friends - either thought should make you think hard about what's real and can save you heartache later." - Michelle Campbell, healer (and hoodwinked once upon a time).

***

"Foster misconceptions of your temperment and abilities, then never show the full truth - only hint at it." -Sir Thomas (the) Hunter, vampire lord and more refined and powerful than he led on...

"Magic is a gift. But it's not the mage's gift. It is the people's gift. The mage's blessing is the privilege to share the gift of magic with all of humanity. The mage is the *bearer* of the gift, not the recipient." -Greenbow, pensive folk mage.

"Every one of us comes into this world naked, screaming, covered in blood. Many of us will leave the same way. Anything that happens in between is just embellishment." -Benoni, independently legislated urban ranger.

"There are two kinds of people in the world: those who have already betrayed you and those who eventually will. A friend is someone from whom you won't even see it coming." -Benoni, independently legislated urban ranger.

"Nobody wakes up in the morning and says 'I think I will be good today.' We're all just improvising, making it up as we go along, doing what it takes (*whatever* it takes) to survive from one day to the next. But late at night the only sound is the echo of our own deeds, the tick-tock of conscience that could drive you mad. That's when we label ourselves as 'good' and our enemies as 'evil'. 'Goodness' is an opiate for the restless soul; personal revisionist history that lets you justify your own continued survival in an uncaring and arbitrary world." -Benoni, independently legislated urban ranger.

"It's better to be wrong than dead. If you don't know what to do, then do *anything*." -Benoni, independently legislated urban ranger.

"Lots of people are alive. But vanishingly few ever really live, choosing instead to sleepwalk from cradle to grave. Live! Eat, shout, run, screw, dance, shit, fly ... live! Wake up and live! Grab the world with both hands and hold on for the white-knuckled ride of your life. Live now, before you die in your sleep never even knowing what you missed." -Benoni, independently legislated urban ranger.
