Dearest Jane,
A pleasant Samhain to you, Janie dear. It is the Summer's End and the dark Winter is upon us all. I have carved my Spirit Guardian as set down in the Old Ways and have lit my hearth from a Bonfire. I admit, here in the Bay Area, there is little change in the weather. Perhaps, it is a bit cooler but it is hard to tell. There is no snow and I hear that the Winter 'season' is little more than cold rain, beginning in December.
I find that I am missing the brilliant colors of the Autumn leaves and the thought of not seeing snow covering the ground saddens me. In a way, it feels like the Cycle has been stunted. I know this is not true however, I cannot help but think that. Seasons are meant to be that - Seasons. The renewal of Life in the Spring; the growth of the fertile fields in Summer; the harvesting time of Autumn; and the deep sleep of the Winter. Each has its place in the Cycle.
I will never not revere this day, my sister. It is the day John transformed from my Academic Advisor into my Domitor. It is the day I almost died forever because of my arrogant foolishness and dabbling with those forces I had no hope of comprehending, much less controlling. It is the day my mortal mundane life died. It is the day my life truly began.
If only you could be here to share this night with me once more.
But enough of my melancholia and nostalgia. I shall not bother you with it anymore. Also, I do have some good news. I went to Filip's party this evening. I am happy I went. Filip has an interesting set of friends and an even more interesting set of art.
He was right to say that I would be interested. I am not sure how, but he managed to acquire a small carpet from the 8th Century with a design based on the one of pages from the Book of Durrow! That is not all. He has the Killamery Cross. I thought it was lost decades ago in a robbery. I do not know how he found it, but he did. I am seriously considering bidding for it. It could be very useful to me in my studies.
It is good to know that Filip is true to his word about his ability to acquire rare and obscure artifacts. There are a couple of items I have in mind that I may commission him to find for me. Also, he knows of my interest in various medieval artifacts that we have discussed in the past. I believe he mentioned that he would keep an eye out for anything unusual and would let me know if something surfaced that he thought I would be interested in. A very good arrangement, I must admit. And a very good evening. I am glad I went.
Love,
Kayley
