Birthday Loot!
Growing up, I always felt gypped by having a birthday in December. It was right in the middle of the holiday season and everyone was always worried about that instead of me. (Not to mention Final Week in school.) Even worst, I had to share my birthday with my twin brother. He was an endless embarrassment and a pain in the butt (most of the time) and I had to share MY day with him. Obviously, I learned to deal. I'll admit, I never "liked" sharing my birthday with my brother but the older we got, the more tolerable it was.

It my twenties, I was the girl who always hoped for a surprise party who never got one. Eventually, I stopped even mentioning my birthday at all. To my surprise, people scolded me for this. Somewhere in my late 20's and early 30's I came to some sort of accord within myself. I would mention it, but not expect anything while quietly hoping. It worked out.

These days, I've never disappointed because my wants are less and my life is full. Of course, though, I'm never unhappy when someone remembers my birthday. I received tons of well wishes and a couple of cards. I also got some really cool stuff:

  • A Steampunk's Guide to the Apocalypse – from Rory
  • Advanced Fugitive: Running, Hiding, Surviving and Thriving Forever – from Jeff
  • The World Without Us – From Jeff
  • A check – From my parents
  • A pretty jade and opal necklace – From Jeff
  • And a couple of rain checks from people telling me that my gift is on order or in the mail which is cool because every birthday should be celebrated for a week.

Plus, Jeff took us to an overnight at a 5 star spa for massages and fining dining and stuff. All of the gifts I received I really appreciated because everything I got meant something to me on a more intimate level. As Rory said, "I walked over to the booth and there should've been a sign saying, 'This was made for Jenn.'"

There was one last thing I wanted for my birthday – news of something – is something I have not yet received. Thus, no good news or bad. The door is still open and I'm waiting. As soon as I can say more, I will. Until then, I'll accept it as a late birthday or a Christmas gift.

I'm really beginning to wonder if I broke something in me. (Or if I've suddenly become an official Pacific Northwestern Person.) I just got the winter storm watch warning from the weather channel and instead of groaning at the idea of snow, I'm positively gleeful. I don't know why. I don't like snow. It's wet, cold, slippery, dangerous and … and yet, I still want snow. I've wanted it to snow for at least a week now.

Maybe I feel secure in my home that we have enough supplies, water, heat, etc… to hunker down for a bit. Maybe it is because I'm not in my old condo and I have little to no fear of me losing power for more than four hours (instead of four days).

As an aside, Jeff and I have had a long standing argument/agreement about whether or not to get an emergency generator and when. After a long discussion about it and him assuring me that he's never lost power for more than four hours at a time, we came to the accord that if we ever lost power for more than 12 consecutive hours, we would get a generator. For a long time, I wondered how it was that he always had power. Then I discovered that we are on the same grid as the Army Reserve Station three blocks over. Suddenly, everything made sense. While we still have the standing agreement, I'm a lot more confident in things.

    But, I digress.

Snow. I want it. Apparently it is coming in a couple of days. According to the extended forecast, we will get snow this weekend and next weekend. It would be really nice to have a white Christmas.

Be Careful What You Wish For
On December 11th I was feeling gypped at not getting the snow I wanted. On December 13th, it started snowing off and on (mostly on) and pretty much didn't stop until this morning. Jeff and I personally got about 18 inches of snow and had a white Christmas – a true rarity in Seattle. It has been beautiful and magical and wonderful from the inside of my house.

I can't say the same for driving anywhere. The side roads have been a serious mess. Some of my friends have been literally snowed in and unable to go anywhere – work, the grocery store, visiting family or friends for the holidays. None of it. SEA-TAC has been a mess, too. I am so glad that I had no plans to travel for the holidays.

I'm also happy that it all slacked off just enough for people to come to my Orphans Christmas party. We had a full house, lots of food and lots of fun. Disaster movies and board games and deep fried turkeys starred. It was a good time.

Now, I won't take all the credit for bringing the weather. We are in the jet stream and such but I do have a great story of being born in Alaska and having snowstorms following my family around the nation for decades. Maybe I'll talk about that someday.

Gifts were pretty awesome this year. Jeff and I bought a bunch of "little stuff" for each other and then to buy a couple of big things for the house. We now have a lovely breadmaker and, eventually, we will get a nice set of Tupperware or Rubbermaid storage containers.

    Gifts from Jeff:

  • Pair of gorgeous metal bracelets (that have character jewelry written all over them)
  • Fairy door (already set up)
  • 1883 real silver dollar and a bunch of uncirculated Susan B.'s for my treasure chest
  • The Black Plague microplush (who is currently cavorting with my gargoyles)
  • Leatherman multi-tool (used a bunch of time already)
  • Micro Spy TV remote
  • The Unofficial MacGuyver How-To Handbook (read and loved)
  • Field Guide to the Apocalypse (read and laughed at)
  • Unrated special edition of Boondock Saints (watched and enjoyed)

Let me tell you, between these gifts and my birthday gifts, it is clear that both my husband listens to me and /gets/ me. He understands what I like and what I want. As weird and odd and occasionally antisocial as it all may be, he understands it and that is the best gift of all.

    Gifts from Family:

  • T-shirt: I'm only wearing black until they come out with something darker
  • Blokus board game (snickered over)
  • Homemade biscotti (om-nom-nom)
  • Crockpot (set up)
  • 1001 Fix-it and Forget-it Crockpot recipes (looked though)
  • Figi's meat and cheese gift (om-nom-nom)
  • Cash

My sister picked out the t-shirt especially for me and that makes me laugh. It's true. I am partial to my black clothing. It all matches each other (mostly), I don't have to think too hard about getting dressed in the morning and, as I like to say, "I'm a gamer, a geek, a goth and an author. Black is pretty much a required uniform."

One of the best things was the number of friends who came to the Orphans Christmas and other celebrations. It was really nice to see them. This was my first Christmas as a married woman and I really enjoyed it. Jeff really made my Christmas special.

End of the Year Wrap Up
I'm going to cheat here. I'm going to put my "this is what happened this year" Christmas letter here, too. It pretty much wraps up everything Jeff and I did for the year.

    1 December 2008
    Dear Everyone,

Welcome to Jeff and Jennifer's first (and possibly last) official holiday letter. It was a big year for the two of us, so we thought we'd share our happiness and gratitude at the last year we have had together.

A year ago, last December, Jeff asked Jennifer to marry him in a surprise proposal weeks before he met Jennifer's family. He had taken matters into his own hands and called Jenn's parents to ask for permission for her hand in marriage and it had been granted. After she was done being stunned, she accepted his proposal with a glad heart and open arms. Fast forward to May 1st. The two families found themselves in Las Vegas, at the Excalibur, for Jeff and Jennifer's Renaissance wedding. Though there were a few wedding war stories, the wedding itself was picture perfect and a new union between the two people (and families) was created. Five months later, Jeff and Jennifer finally had their delayed honeymoon on the Big Island, Hawaii, at the Kona Village resort.

Jeff's career at Microsoft is proceeding according to plan and he is happy. His job as a Software Engineer in Design and Test is safe and secure. He works on the MSN.com MONEY website, writing and testing code on the back end servers that deal with Stock Market numbers. Let's just say the website is robust, secure and getting a work out.

On the dancing side of things, Jeff was the male lead, in the USA Dance Team Showcase presentation of "Take the Floor… And Dance!" This was a "dance-ical" – a dramatic performance with speaking and ballroom dancing but no singing. He played "Detective Gene Kelly" who was hired to discover who had attacked the lead dance instructor at a small dance school. He had the most lines in the show and performed in eight ballroom dance sequences.

This was also a very big year for Jennifer and her writing career as a fiction author and a freelance technical writer. For the first time, Jennifer is making her living solely on what she is bringing in as an author. On the technical writing side of things she worked with Microsoft and the American Environmental Services Company and has an ongoing freelance contract with Amazon.com in the electronics department. If you want to know anything about speakers, she's probably got an answer for you.

On the fiction side of things, Jennifer's personal webzine project, The Edge of Propinquity, is finishing up its third year of publication. She has written for, or will be writing for, the following role-playing game company, world building and fiction writing: Margaret Weis Productions, OtherWorld Creations, Rogue Games, Catalyst Labs and White Wolf. She has also sold a couple of short stories to anthologies.

The most exciting news is that Jennifer sold her post-apocalyptic anthology, GRANTS PASS, to Morrigan Books and it will be coming out in July 2009. She is a contributor to, and the co-editor of, this anthology which includes stories from authors like Ed Greenwood, Jay Lake and Cherie Priest. This anthology was once a personal project that Jennifer refused to allow to die and now, five years after conception, it will be published.

Life is never boring around this house – especially not with three kitties that don't always get along – but it is wonderful. We are happy, healthy and relatively sane. We all wish you, and yours, a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a wonderful holiday season.

    With much love,
    Jeff & Jennifer

I do not do New Year Resolutions anymore. I have specific goals that I strive for and hope to achieve. Some of these goals are easy. Some are darn near impossible. But having specific goals helps me keep focused as a freelance author and technical writer. Resolutions were good for me when I was younger, but now, I have focused goals each week and month of the year.

  • New short stories – Goal: 15, Written: 22
  • Submissions – Goal: 12, Submitted: 24 - Accepted: 2, Rejected: 19, Pending: 3
  • New Freaky Friday Fictions: Goal: 21, Written: 21
  • Query Stats: 32 submitted - 15 manuscript requests received, 1 acceptance received, 25 rejections received, 1 pending
  • New Publications: 4

I did not keep track of my word count this year. That was not as important to me as the specific writing goals that I set for myself this year. I focused a lot more on trying to get published, finishing up one novel, selling another book and searching for an agent. The novel is done. I sold the anthology. The agent search is ongoing but positive.

I guess my biggest publication news for 2008 was selling my post apocalyptic anthology GRANTS PASS. It comes out in July 2009 from Morrigan Books. That and almost 50% of the agents queried as an agent, or for a specific book, requested manuscripts. That's a pretty good statistic.

I have set up my writing and editing goals for next year:

  • New submissions: 18+
  • New short stories written: 15+
  • New novels written: 2
  • Written novels edited: 2
  • New RPG assignments received: 6+

All in all, I think this is a good set of goals for my fiction writing career. It is nice to have quantifiable goals to strive for each year.
